The Premier Release of 2025: The Artist's Lux Secures the Number One Place.

Initially, this work may look closer to an arduous university quiz rather than a new pop project from an artist whose last hit was a collaboration with a global pop star. Split into 4 different movements and sung in 13 languages, this is a dizzying symphonic opus investigating feminine mystique, religious transcendence, and bodily transformation, often by way of the perspective of various saintly figures. The end of a romance—a theme treated with grounded honesty on another major 2025 album—soars upwards on this record, supported by the constant presence of a major symphony orchestra and work from an award-winning songwriter within an extensive roll call of contributors. Its sheer daring alone renders the efforts of other artists look rather laughable.

Transcending Scholarly Pretense

The fact that this album manages to avoid overly intellectual posturing feels nearly miraculous, with full praise going to the artist. Although this is not the first time album to blend the past and the present, the scale are far greater on Lux, with the tightrope walk far more dramatic. What really elevates this fourth album, outside of its multilayered melodies, dense compositions, and engrained drama, proves to be an essential spirit of joy. Much like the iconic artist at her peak, you find a captivating sense to Rosalía's voice which sweeps you into its whirlwind. When she's tearing your heart apart, the listener still desire to stay right there for the journey.

A Prime Moment of Exuberance

This exuberant energy shines clearly on a stirring piano-led song about a saint. It bathes in a sorrowful whirlpool over more than four moments. Suddenly, all the music drops silent, and we hear a gleeful laugh followed by a declaration before a comically over-the-top string surge crashes in with comedic force. The song then segues to the frenetic track driven by galloping orchestration, an imposing choir, and a surprise appearance from the artist herself.

"The magic with Lux lies in you never exactly know—nor want to predict—what you will go next."

Almost every song ends at a completely different place than how it started. A track examines the fleeting nature of celebrity with a featherlight symphony before collapsing into electronic chaos. Another, a cut echoing the artist's previous trap-infused style begins out moody and sinister, with menacing beats, until sudden traditional rhythms and an angelic chorus enter to smooth its rough corners.

The Bridge Between Experiment & Pop

A key achievement on Lux involves navigating the gap between radical experimentation and broad accessibility. It is little surprise that it has achieved the artist's highest-charting work to break into the upper reaches of key charts: its heart contains a collection of truly catchy hits. A song sung entirely in English swells around a chorus that feels to collect more and more infectious melodies as it spirals skyward. This feat gets echoed by a different expansive ballad that grows and contracts, intertwining layered tunes like an intricate weave.

  • A waltz-like song seduces via its jaunty, theatrical drama and a chant-along chorus.
  • Lyrically, it shares the pop culture honesty of other breakup songs, lambasting a former lover labeled an "psychological bully".
  • Across these tracks, the singing have a painted-on smile, like a fairy-tale figure hiding a knife: "Top prize in being a scoundrel / You have won the trophy of letdown."

An Opulent Banquet for the Soul

This album represents popular music on a grand scale, an ambitious reach for high Art amid of looming artificial blankness. It eschews solipsism for glorious transcendence, creating an over-the-top spectacle that skillfully controls its inherent ridiculousness. This is a deep source of hidden gems that requires time to completely mine but doesn't feels like hard work. While some big releases of 2025 seemed like feasting on meal, Lux offers a lavish feast where the characters at the table, some intoxicated on holy wine, flit between discussions about ancient figures, the galvanizing feeling of soul-shattering sadness, and shared stories about useless partners. In essence, it's a modern-day theatrical production from music's truly restlessly inventive practitioner.
